Learning to drive in the Redlands

The Redlands is home ground for Metro, our office sits out at Victoria Point, so these are the roads we know best of all. It is mostly bayside and flat, which makes the quiet foreshore streets around Cleveland, Ormiston and Wellington Point an easy place for a first lesson. Capalaba is the busy hub in the middle with its shopping centre and heavier traffic, and out towards Mount Cotton and Sheldon the land rises into hills and semi-rural lanes.

Because this is where we are based, our Redlands instructors are properly local and teach on the roads you use every day, from Old Cleveland Road and Finucane Road to the Cleveland-Redland Bay Road running down to the ferry. You keep one instructor throughout, a parent can book and follow along, and the aim is a driver who is at ease everywhere from the bay to the hills well after test day.

Bayside streetsFlat, quiet foreshore roads around Cleveland, Ormiston and Victoria Point, a calm place to start out.

Capalaba in the middleThe Capalaba shopping hub and the roads around it get busy, which is good for building confidence in traffic.

Hills at Mount CottonOut towards Mount Cotton and Sheldon the roads climb, so hill starts get a proper look-in.

Your local test centreThe Cleveland centre holds the practical test for the whole Redlands, booked through Transport and Main Roads.

The Redlands driving school, based here

The licensing steps

From your Ls to your Ps

Here is the run from a learner permit to your Ps in Queensland, and where our Redlands lessons fit in.

1

Get your Ls

Sit the learner theory test and pick up your learner permit.

2

Start lessons

Take a first lesson with a Redlands instructor who comes to your door.

3

Log 100 hours

Build up your supervised hours, 10 at night. Lessons count as well.

4

Mock test

Run test conditions on the Cleveland roads and tidy up the last habits.

5

Pass your test

Sit it in the dual-control car you trained in, with us there on the day.

6

On your Ps

Provisional licence done. Refresher lessons are here later if you want them.

10 = 30hours in your logbook

Professional lessons count triple

Queensland builds a genuine head start into the logbook. Each of your first 10 hours of professional lessons is recorded as three, so 10 hours become 30, which clears close to a third of the 100 supervised hours early.

Your Redlands instructor records every lesson so it counts. After the first 10 they log as normal hours, and they are usually the most useful driving before the test. Where a parent supervises, it also trims the run of night drives.

Where you'll sit the test

Redlands driving test centres

Your practical test is arranged and conducted by Transport and Main Roads rather than by Metro. Across the Redlands it runs from the Cleveland centre, so that is where your test day will be. Your instructor can take you over the nearby roads first so it feels familiar.

Bayside

Cleveland

The Redlands practical test runs from the Cleveland centre in the Ross Court Centre, on the corner of Bloomfield Street and Ross Court. It covers the whole bay, from Wellington Point down to Redland Bay.

Which services the centre runs can change, so check the current details and book straight through Transport and Main Roads.

Redlands driving lesson questions

The Redlands has its own centre. The practical test is held at Cleveland, in the Ross Court Centre on Bloomfield Street, and it covers the whole bay from Wellington Point down to Redland Bay. You book the test with Transport and Main Roads, and your instructor can run the local roads with you first.

Yes. Metro's office is at Victoria Point, so the Redlands is home ground for us. Our instructors are local to the bay and teach on the roads here every day, which is exactly the local knowledge you want going into a test.

Yes. Most of the Redlands is flat, but the roads climb out towards Mount Cotton and Sheldon, so your instructor will make sure you are comfortable with hill starts there before test day.

Yes. Free door-to-door pick-up and drop-off comes with every lesson, so we can collect you from home, work, a TAFE campus or school anywhere in the Redlands and bring you back.

Both, at the one price. Automatic is the fastest way to a licence; manual earns the full unrestricted one. A single hour is $93, with the 5 and 10-lesson packs working out cheaper per lesson.

In Queensland you record 100 supervised hours, 10 of them at night, and pass the hazard perception test before the practical. Your first 10 hours of professional lessons each count as three, so they add up to 30 in the logbook.
