Learning to drive on the Sunshine Coast

The part of the Sunshine Coast we cover runs from the coast at Caloundra back into the Glass House Mountains hinterland, and the two are quite different to learn on. Around Caloundra and Little Mountain the streets are flat and steady, with the beachside roads and the Caloundra Road traffic to get used to. Inland at Beerwah, Landsborough and Maleny the country turns hilly and green, with winding roads and long climbs that take real practice.

Our instructors live across the area and teach on the roads you will actually use, whether that is the coastal run around Caloundra, the campus streets at Sippy Downs, or the climbs up towards Maleny. You keep one instructor the whole way, a parent can handle the booking and keep track, and the aim is a driver who is at ease on both the flat coast and the hinterland hills long after the test.

From your Ls to your Ps

The path from a learner permit through to your Ps in Queensland runs like this, and here is where our coast lessons come in.

Pass the learner theory test and collect your learner permit.

10 = 30hours in your logbook

Professional lessons count triple

The Queensland logbook comes with a real leg-up. Your first 10 hours of professional lessons are each logged as three, turning 10 into 30, which knocks close to a third off the 100 supervised hours before you have done much driving.

Your coast instructor records each lesson so the hours are counted right. Past the first 10 they log as ordinary hours, and they are usually the most useful practice before the test. If a parent is supervising, it also eases the run of night drives.

Which test centre will I use on the Sunshine Coast?

For this part of the coast the practical test is held at the Caloundra centre on Canberra Terrace. You book the test with Transport and Main Roads, and your instructor can take you over the roads near the centre first. One thing to note is the carpark height limit at Caloundra, so allow time to park nearby if needed.

Do you teach in the Glass House Mountains hinterland?

Yes. We cover Beerwah, Landsborough, Maleny and the smaller hinterland towns, where the winding roads and long hill climbs are genuinely different to the coast and take a bit more practice. We teach the coast and the hinterland alike.

Do you pick up from the University of the Sunshine Coast?

Yes. Free door-to-door pick-up is included, so we can collect students from the Sippy Downs campus, or from home, work or school anywhere across the area, and drop you back.

Do you teach on the coast at Caloundra as well?

Yes. The flat, steady streets around Caloundra and Little Mountain are a calm place to start, before building up to the beachside traffic and Caloundra Road. It is a good place to find your feet.

Do you teach automatic and manual, and what does it cost?

Both, at the same price. Automatic is the quickest path to a licence; manual earns the full unrestricted one. One hour comes to $93, and the 5 and 10-lesson packs lower the price of each lesson.

How many supervised hours do I need before the test?

Queensland learners log 100 supervised hours, including 10 at night, and pass the hazard perception test before the practical. The first 10 hours of professional lessons each count as three, so they go in as 30.
