Automatic or manual?

Pick what matters most to you and we'll point you the right way. Sometimes the honest answer is manual, and we'll say so.

AAutomatic Recommended

  • No clutch or gears to coordinate
  • Often fewer lessons before you're test-ready
  • A calmer start for nervous learners
  • Your licence covers automatics only

MManual Full licence

  • Lets you drive any car, with no licence condition
  • Needed for some trade and work vehicles
  • More to coordinate: clutch, gears and hill starts
  • Can take a few more lessons to feel ready
If you want the quickest, least stressful way to get licensed, automatic is usually the better choice.
With no clutch or gears to manage, automatic gives you less to think about on your first few lessons.
If you'll need to drive utes, hire cars or work vehicles, manual is worth the extra lessons. We teach that too, at the same price.

Automatic lesson questions

For most people, yes. There's no clutch or gear changes, so you can put your attention on the road. That often means fewer lessons and less to worry about early on.

No. An automatic licence only covers automatic vehicles. If you may need to drive manual cars, it's worth learning manual instead. It costs the same, and we teach both.

No. Automatic and manual lessons are the same price at Metro, so you can choose based on what suits you.

Many learners do, because there's less to master. Your timeline still depends on your starting point and how much you practise between lessons, so we won't put a number on it up front.
