Learning to drive in Brisbane

Brisbane is a big, spread-out city, and learning to drive here depends a lot on where you start. A first lesson in the quiet streets of Kenmore is a world away from the stop-start traffic on Gympie Road, or reading the one-way blocks and bus lanes of the CBD. The river cuts the city in two, and sooner or later you'll be crossing it on one of the bridges.

That's why our instructors are local to your part of Brisbane. They teach on the roads you'll actually use, coach the hill starts the western and northern suburbs are full of, and build up to the busier arterials and roundabouts once your confidence is there. You keep the same instructor each lesson, so nothing gets lost between visits, and a parent can do the booking and follow the progress if they're the one organising it. The aim is a driver who's still relaxed on Brisbane's hills and bridges years after the test.

The licensing steps

From your Ls to your Ps

Here are the main steps to a Queensland licence, and where lessons with Metro fit in.

1

Get your Ls

Pass the learner theory test and pick up your learner permit.

2

Start lessons

Book your first lesson with a Brisbane instructor who comes to you.

3

Log 100 hours

Build your supervised hours, including 10 at night. Your instructor's hours count too.

4

Mock test

Rehearse the real practical test on local roads and fix the last few habits.

5

Pass your test

Sit the test in our familiar dual-control car, with test-day support.

6

On your Ps

Provisional licence sorted. Refresher lessons are there if you want them later.

10 = 30hours in your logbook

Professional lessons count triple

In Queensland, the first 10 hours of professional driving lessons each count as three hours in your learner logbook. Those 10 hours go in as 30, which takes a real chunk out of the 100 supervised hours a learner records before the practical test.

Your instructor logs each lesson so the hours are recorded correctly. After the first 10, lessons still add up as normal logbook hours, and they tend to be some of the most useful practice before test day. If a parent is sharing the supervising, it also means fewer late evenings spent chasing night hours.

Where you'll sit the test

Brisbane driving test centres

Your practical driving test is booked and run by Transport and Main Roads, not by Metro. Several centres around greater Brisbane hold tests, and the one you use usually comes down to where you live. Your instructor will help you practise the roads and situations near your local centre, so test day feels familiar rather than a surprise.

Inner city

Brisbane City

Suits learners around the inner suburbs who are used to one-way streets, bus lanes and steady city traffic.

North

Chermside, Carseldine & Zillmere

The main northside options, handy right across the northern suburbs. Some northside centres run Saturday tests.

South

Greenslopes & MacGregor

Popular southside centres. Greenslopes is one of the few that runs Saturday tests.

West

Sherwood & Toowong

Serving the western suburbs, with the mix of quiet streets and busier arterials common to that side.

Bayside east

Wynnum

The bayside option for learners around the eastern suburbs and the Wynnum and Manly area.

Surrounds

Logan, Redcliffe & North Ipswich

Just beyond Brisbane, covering Logan, the Redcliffe peninsula and the Ipswich side. Logan also runs Saturday tests.

Transport and Main Roads can change which centres hold tests and when, so check the current list and book directly through Transport and Main Roads. Whichever centre you use, your instructor can take you through the local roads beforehand.

A very positive experience with Metro Driving School. Victor was amazing with my daughter, who experiences anxiety and autism. He was supportive, patient and understanding of her needs, and adapted the way he taught, which made a real difference to her confidence.

I had about four lessons with Adam at Metro Driving School and it was fantastic. He taught me road rules, manoeuvres and road safety tips, and I passed my driving test with no mistakes. Metro Driving School is worth every cent.

I wanted to express my gratitude for the guidance Alan provided during my son's driving lessons. His calm manner, clear instructions and patience made a huge difference to Luca's confidence, and he passed his test on a manual the first time.
