Before you can book

You can't book the practical test until you've passed the car Hazard Perception Test, and, if you're under 25, had your 100-hour logbook (including 10 hours at night) approved. It catches a lot of learners out. We help you get genuinely ready, not just turn up on the day.

On the day

Arrive about 20 minutes early with your learner licence and a registered, roadworthy car with L-plates. You can use your own car or hire one of ours, dual controls aren't required for the test. Before you drive, the assessor checks you can find and explain the main controls.

Hire a car for the test

The drive

The assessment takes about 25 to 35 minutes for a car. An assessor rides along and sets tasks in real traffic, including merging at speed and turning at intersections, while scoring your control, observation, road position and the set manoeuvres. Reversing cameras don't count towards observation, so you still make every head-check.

Rehearse it with a mock test

Your result

Pass, and you can drive on your Ps straight away: a P1 licence if you're under 25, or a P2 if you're 25 or over. If it doesn't go your way, you can rebook, the next day after a first attempt, then 8 days, then 29 days. Getting it right early saves weeks, which is why a mock test and a warm-up are worth it.

Which test centre you'll use

Transport and Main Roads runs the practical driving test from its customer service centres, and the one you'll use depends on where you live.

Your local centre

We prepare you on the roads around the centre your area tests at, so the streets and the manoeuvres feel familiar on the day rather than new.

Not every office runs the test

This one catches people out. Some Transport and Main Roads offices only handle licensing, so the office closest to you may not be where the practical test is held. Always check the centre before you book.

Driving test questions

Can I use my own car, or do I need dual controls?

You can use your own car as long as it's registered and roadworthy with L-plates displayed. Dual controls aren't required for the test. Many learners prefer to hire our dual-control car instead, so they're not tested in something unfamiliar.

What do I need before I can book the test?

You need to have passed the car Hazard Perception Test first, and, if you're under 25, had your 100-hour logbook (including 10 hours at night) approved. Once those are done you can book your practical test with Transport and Main Roads.

How long does the test take, and what's assessed?

What happens if I don't pass?

You can rebook and sit it again. After a first attempt you can retest the next day, after a second there's an 8-day wait, and after that a 29-day wait. That's exactly why a mock test and a warm-up are worth it, passing sooner saves weeks.

I'm 25 or over. Do I still go through the Ps?

If you're 25 or over you don't need a logbook, and once you pass the practical test you go straight to a P2 licence rather than P1. Under-25s complete the logbook and move to P1 first.
