Is manual the right choice for you?

Manual takes a bit more to learn, and it gives you a licence with no conditions. Here's how the two compare, so you can choose on what you actually need.

  • Drive any car, manual or automatic, with no condition

  • Handy for hiring cars in Australia and overseas
  • More to coordinate, so it can take a few more lessons

AAutomatic Quicker start

  • No clutch or gears, so often fewer lessons
  • A calmer start for nervous learners
  • Your licence covers automatics only
  • Not enough if you need to drive a manual later
If you want to drive any car without a licence condition, including work vehicles and hire cars, manual is the one to learn.
If passing sooner matters most, automatic is usually quicker. You can always upgrade to manual later.
For the calmest start with the least to juggle, automatic is easier. Manual is worth it when you want the full licence.

Manual lesson questions

If you want to drive any vehicle without a licence restriction, including manual work vehicles or hire cars, then yes. A manual pass gives you a full, unrestricted licence. If you'll only ever drive automatics, automatic is the quicker option.

There's more to coordinate: the clutch, gears and hill starts on top of the core road skills. It can take a few more lessons, and our instructors teach it step by step so it becomes second nature rather than a source of stress.
