Learning to drive here
What it’s like learning in Gumdale
Gumdale is one of Brisbane’s largest acreage suburbs, with big blocks, tree-lined verges and long, low-traffic streets. Most first lessons stay on these calmer roads, such as Grassdale Road, London Road and Boston Road, where you can settle into steering, gentle braking and reversing without much passing traffic. The acreage layout keeps speeds low and leaves space to work on turns and three-point turns before anything busier.
When you are ready, New Cleveland Road is the suburb’s main road and the one you will meet most often. It runs past the Eastside Village shops at the Tilley Road corner and links Gumdale with Capalaba to the south-east. Gumdale State School on New Cleveland Road is a handy marker for pick-ups, and Redlands College is a short drive away over in Wellington Point. From here most learners follow New Cleveland Road to Capalaba, then Old Cleveland Road East through Alexandra Hills towards the Cleveland test centre.

What we cover around Gumdale
- New Cleveland Road carries most of Gumdale’s through-traffic, so turning in and out of it near the Eastside Village shops is worth plenty of practice
- The corner of New Cleveland Road and Tilley Road, beside Eastside Village, is the suburb’s busiest give-way and a good one to rehearse
- Grassdale Road, London Road and Boston Road are quiet acreage streets that suit first-time steering and reversing
- Belmont Road gives longer, steadier stretches to build confidence away from the shops
- New Cleveland Road heads south-east to Capalaba, the usual way out towards the Cleveland test centre
