What it’s like learning in Capalaba West

The western part of Capalaba is mostly settled family streets, with pockets of housing tucked in around Ney Road and the bushland edge near Coolnwynpin. We tend to start new learners on these calmer back streets, where you can get used to steering, gentle braking and reversing without much passing traffic. As the basics settle we move on to kerbside parking and three-point turns on the wider residential roads, which is where most people start to relax behind the wheel.

When you are ready for busier driving, Redland Bay Road and Old Cleveland Road East carry the heavier Capalaba traffic, with roundabouts, traffic lights and shopping-centre turns around the Capalaba Park and Capalaba Central precinct. Moreton Bay Road heads off to the north-west and Ney Road links the western pockets back to the main road. For test preparation we work the car towards Finucane Road, the arterial that runs from Capalaba through to Cleveland and the practical test centre.

From Capalaba West the usual run is through the Capalaba centre and onto Finucane Road, which feeds south-east into Cleveland and the roundabout near Bloomfield Street, so we spend test lessons on those exact roads. On the day you drive one of our school cars, so the pedals, mirrors and gearchange are already second nature by the time the examiner sits beside you.

We head out through the Capalaba centre and pick up Finucane Road, which runs across to Cleveland and comes in near the Bloomfield Street roundabout, a short step from the Ross Court Centre. It is around a fifteen minute drive, and we run it enough times that the roundabouts and lane choices feel routine well before test day.

Early lessons stay on the calm streets near Ney Road and Coolnwynpin, then we build up to Redland Bay Road, Old Cleveland Road East and the busier turns around the Capalaba shopping centres.
