Learning to drive here
What it’s like learning in Wellington Point
Wellington Point is a calm coastal pocket that runs out towards the jetty, the reserve and King Island, so a lot of the residential streets carry very little through traffic. Many learners begin on the quieter roads near Sovereign Waters and the streets around the foreshore reserve, where the speeds are low and there is room to get comfortable with steering, braking and checking mirrors. From there it is a short step to practising give-way turns and gentle roundabouts before taking on anything larger.
When you are ready, Main Road is the road to know. It is the suburb’s spine, linking the foreshore and the shopping precinct near the Wellington Point Clock Tower down towards Ormiston and on to Cleveland. Anson Road, which passes Redlands College, and Birkdale Road, which heads west, are useful for practising lane discipline and school-zone awareness. The same Main Road run south is exactly how you reach the practical test centre at Cleveland, so time spent on it early pays off.
