Learning to drive here
What it’s like learning in Ormiston
Most beginners find their feet on the older residential grid set back from the water, where streets such as Armagh Street, Arthur Street, Bell Street and Court Street stay slow and low on through traffic. There is room to get used to steering, smooth braking and low-speed turns before anything busier comes into it. The gentle rises down toward the Empire Point foreshore are handy for practising a hill start and holding the car steady on a slope.
Once you’re steadier, lessons move onto Wellington Street, the spine of the suburb that runs past the heritage-listed Ormiston House and the railway station, and then onto Finucane Road, the main arterial carrying traffic south toward Cleveland. Dundas Street West beside Ormiston College is good for reading school-zone signs and timed limits, while Hilliard Street gives you a narrower older lane and the bridge over Hilliards Creek. From there it is a short, familiar run down to the Cleveland test centre.
