Learning to drive here
What it’s like learning in Thorneside
It is a compact suburb and an easy place to begin, with the creek and the boat ramp at the end of Helen Street giving it a genuine bayside feel. Most beginners start on the settled residential streets set back from the main road, quieter stretches like Frank Street, Ferry Road and the lanes around Railway Parade, where there is space to get comfortable with the pedals, gentle turns and reversing before any real traffic comes into it.
When it feels right, we move onto the busier local roads such as Mooroondu Road and Thorneside Road, and work through the turns near Thorneside railway station where parked cars and people crossing keep you alert. From there the drive south into Birkdale puts you onto Old Cleveland Road East, the arterial that carries you toward Cleveland and the test centre, so the route is well worn in your memory long before test day.

What we cover around Thorneside
- Mooroondu Road is the main road running through Thorneside, so most lessons include easing in and out of its side streets
- The boat ramp and car park at Queens Esplanade and Helen Street are handy for practising reversing and low-speed control beside the creek
- Thorneside railway station on Railway Parade brings kerbside stops, drop-off traffic and pedestrians to keep an eye on
- Heading south, Old Cleveland Road East through Birkdale is the arterial that links Thorneside toward Cleveland
- Quieter streets such as Frank Street and Ferry Road suit a first lesson before you take on any through-road
